Y6 Transition at LCHS
Hello, and welcome to the transition page for prospective Year 7 students at Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School! My name is Mr Wray, and I’m the Cross-Phase Transition Coordinator and Family Liaison Officer here at LCHS. Transitioning from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone, and we are committed to making this process as smooth and positive as possible for all students and their families.
At LCHS, we offer a variety of carefully planned activities and support systems to ensure that every child feels welcomed, confident, and ready for the exciting opportunities that secondary school brings. Here’s how we support students as they make this important transition:
1. Open Evening (September)
At the end of September, we hold our Open Evening, where prospective students and their families are invited to come and explore the school. This is a fantastic opportunity to tour the facilities, meet teachers and staff, and get a feel for life at LCHS. Whether you’re already familiar with our school or visiting for the first time, this evening allows you to see what makes LCHS special and to ask any questions you may have about the transition process.
2. Primary School Visits & Meet the Teachers
We begin by visiting the primary schools of our incoming students to get to know them in a familiar environment. During these visits, we’ll engage in activities with the children and speak to their primary school teachers to understand each student’s individual strengths, needs, and preferences. This helps us ensure that we can provide the right support for every child when they arrive at LCHS.
3. Y6 Intake Parent Evening (June
Our Y6 Intake Parent Evening is a chance for parents and carers to meet key members of the LCHS team, hear about the transition process, and find out more about the school. During this evening, we will cover important details such as the school day, uniform expectations, and what Year 7 students can expect. This is also a great opportunity to ask any questions and receive all the information you need to support your child through this transition.
4. Transition Day (July)
In July, we invite all new Year 7 students to spend a day at LCHS for our Transition Day. This day is designed to help students familiarise themselves with the school environment. They’ll meet their form tutors, explore the school buildings, and take part in activities that will help them feel comfortable and confident in their new surroundings before the official start in September.
5. Friendship Day (For Smaller Cohorts)
For students who may be joining us from smaller primary schools or in smaller groups, we offer a Friendship Day. This day focuses on helping students build connections with one another before they officially start. It’s a relaxed, supportive environment where students can make new friends and begin to feel part of the wider school community.
6. A Special First Day
To give Year 7 students a chance to settle in without the pressures of older students around, we dedicate the first day of school in September to Year 7 only. This provides an opportunity for new students to explore the school, get to know their way around, and begin to establish a routine in a calm and supportive environment.
7. Ongoing Support & Activities
Our support for Year 7 students continues throughout their first year at LCHS. We offer a range of extra-curricular activities, mentoring programs, and targeted interventions designed to help students settle in and thrive. From joining clubs to receiving additional academic support, there are many opportunities for students to build confidence and feel more at home in the school.
How You Can Support Your Child’s Transition
We understand that the transition to secondary school can feel like a big change, and your support at home is vital. Here are a few ways you can help:
-
Encourage Open Conversations: Talk to your child about the changes they might be experiencing and any feelings they may have. It’s natural for children to feel excited or nervous, and open communication helps them process these emotions.
-
Stay Organised: Help your child get ready for the new school year by organising their uniform, school supplies, and timetable. This will help reduce any stress they might feel about starting a new chapter in their education.
-
Explore Our Social Media: We share lots of exciting updates, activities, and transition-related content on our Facebook and Instagram pages. These platforms are a great way to stay informed about what’s happening and to get a feel for life at LCHS.
-
Prepare for the Change: Secondary school means more independence and new routines. Talk to your child about these changes and encourage them to embrace the new opportunities they will have to grow and develop.
-
Reach Out if Needed: If your child has any concerns or if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at swray@lchs.uk. We are here to support you and your child throughout the transition process.
Our Promise to You
We are committed to ensuring that every student feels welcomed and supported as they transition to LCHS. Our goal is to make this experience as positive as possible, providing the right balance of guidance, independence, and fun. We look forward to supporting your child on their journey and helping them thrive at LCHS.
We look forward to helping your child succeed and feel at home here at LCHS.
Best wishes,
Mr Wray
